If you are looking for Snape Maltings accommodation for a concert weekend, we would suggest staying somewhere that lets you reach the concert hall without the weekend revolving around the car, and that is the case for Iken, because our five converted barns sit above the same stretch of the Alde estuary, about two miles from Snape Maltings by road, with a footpath along the estuary that will carry you there on foot.
How far is Iken Barns from Snape Maltings?
Snape Maltings is about two miles from Iken Barns by road, and you can also walk there along the estuary and through the salt marshes, which means you can reach the concert hall either way depending on the weather, the time of day and how much of the evening you would like to spend outdoors.
“Fabulous location in the countryside. Short walk down to estuary on River Alde. Lovely walk to Snape Maltings along estuary.”

We are on the south bank of the River Alde, between Snape and Orford, so the Maltings is effectively our nearest neighbour of any size, and from the upstairs bedroom of Gardeners Den you can see it across the salt marshes. We have a short page on Snape Maltings itself, and this guide is the fuller answer for anyone wondering whether Iken works as a base for the music.
Can you walk from Iken to Snape Maltings for a concert?
Yes, the estuary footpath runs from close to the barns along the river to Snape, and for a daytime concert it makes a lovely way to arrive, with the reedbeds and the marsh birds for company. For an evening performance, many visitors may prefer the short drive home, since the path is unlit and runs beside the water.
“We stayed in Greenacres. Cosy and well equipped. Lovely accommodation and great location. The walk to Snape Maltings or up to Iken Church, along the river via direct access from the Barn is lovely.”

We have described the route in detail, along with the reedbed boardwalk behind the Maltings, in our guide to walks from Iken Barns, and two practical points from it are worth carrying with you: the path can be muddy through the colder months, so boots are a good idea, and the lower section floods on spring tides, so it is well worth checking the tide times before you set out. We made much the same case for walking over in our post on staying for the Aldeburgh Food & Drink Festival, which is also held at Snape Maltings, and a concert weekend works in much the same way, with a matinee reached on foot and an evening performance by car.
Which barn suits a concert weekend?
For two people, Gardeners Den and Greenacres each have one king bedroom, and Gardeners Den adds a wood burner and that view of Snape Maltings from upstairs. For families or friends travelling together, Lambings sleeps four across three bedrooms, while Old Mill House and Farriers Cottage each sleep three.
For couples we would point you towards Gardeners Den, because there is something rather fitting about looking out across the marshes to the building you will be sitting in that evening, and because coming back to a wood burner after a concert is hard to improve on; it is worth knowing that its bedroom is upstairs with the shower room downstairs. Greenacres is the other option for two, all on one level, with a gas stove in the living room and an enclosed patio, which makes it a good fit if a dog is coming with you.
If you are bringing the family, or sharing the weekend with friends, Lambings has a king bedroom and two single rooms, an enclosed patio and a table that seats four, while Old Mill House, which has a wood burner, and Farriers Cottage each have a king bedroom and a single. All four of those barns are on one level. And because the barns can be booked together, a larger party can take two or three of them side by side, or the whole site, which sleeps up to fourteen people across nine bedrooms, so that everyone can share supper before the concert and still have their own front door at the end of the night.
When does accommodation near Snape Maltings book up?
The weeks around the Aldeburgh Festival in June book up first at Iken, so if the festival is the reason for your visit it is worth booking as soon as the organisers release their dates. Outside festival time, concerts and events run at the Maltings throughout the year.
The Aldeburgh Festival, which Benjamin Britten founded in 1948, is the high point of the musical year on this coast, and we have gathered some of the background on our Aldeburgh Music page. Because the programme changes from season to season, the Snape Maltings website is the best place to see what is on, and a concert weekend in the autumn or winter, with the marshes empty and a fire lit back at the barn, can be every bit as memorable as a summer one.
What else is there to do at Snape Maltings between concerts?
Snape Maltings is home to a selection of independent shops along with a café, a tea room and a pub, all on one site, so the hours before a performance are easily filled, and the reedbed boardwalk behind the buildings is a pleasant place to stretch your legs.
You might like to make a day of it, browsing the shops in the morning and heading back to the barn for a few hours of doing very little before the evening's music, and because every barn has a well-equipped kitchen you can cook a late supper after the concert rather than racing to find a table. There is also a pub in Snape village, about a thirty-minute walk from the barns, for a quieter drink on the evenings when there is no concert at all.
Questions concert-goers often ask us
Is there parking at the barns?
Yes, each barn has parking for two cars right outside, with plenty more space on site.
What time can we check in?
Check-in is from 4pm and check-out is by 10am. Check-in is self-service, with a key safe at the entrance to the property, and we send you the code before your arrival day, so a late arrival before a Friday concert is no trouble.
Can we bring our dog?
Yes, up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome in every barn, as long as they are on a lead around the Iken Barns site.
Can we get to Iken by train?
The nearest stations are Saxmundham and Wickham Market, with connections from London Liverpool Street via Ipswich. By car it is about two and a half hours from London along the A12, and Iken is only a few minutes from the A12.
