If you are coming for the Aldeburgh Food & Drink Festival, the nicest place to stay is somewhere close enough to walk to it, and because the festival is held at Snape Maltings rather than in Aldeburgh itself, that puts us in a rather good position — we are about two miles upriver on the same stretch of the Alde, close enough that you can follow the estuary path to the festival, spend the day among the stalls, and be back the same afternoon without ever moving the car.
Where is the Aldeburgh Food & Drink Festival held?
At Snape Maltings, the old Victorian maltings on the riverbank, rather than in Aldeburgh town six miles down the coast — a small confusion in the name that is worth knowing before you book anywhere. This year it runs across the weekend of 26th and 27th September, with more than a hundred and thirty local producers, cookery demonstrations and live music spread through the buildings and the yards, and it keeps the unhurried feel of a festival that has grown up in the place it belongs to.
Why we think Iken makes a good base for it
Because we are close enough for you to leave the logistics behind. The walk between us and Snape follows the estuary and the reedbeds and takes roughly 3/4 of an hour on foot, which means a festival weekend spent grazing your way around the producers without giving a second thought to the car parks that fill early on both days, and when you would rather not walk it the back lanes are a quarter of an hour on a bike or under ten minutes to drive, though we would gently make the case for the footpath on festival Saturday.
What else is worth doing while you are here?
Late September is one of our favourite weekends on this coast, and the festival is really only the centre of it, because Snape Maltings keeps its own galleries and shops going year-round, Aldeburgh's fish huts are selling the day's catch a short drive away, and the RSPB reserves settle into their quieter, better selves once the summer has thinned out — a boat can still carry you across to Havergate Island and its avocets, and if you would like a fuller plan we have mapped a couple of unhurried days in our weekend itinerary.
Which of the barns suits a festival weekend?
